How to make hair styling wax

Before you begin

We advise against modifying the quantities or ingredients in this recipe as doing so risks altering the product’s texture.

Ingredients:

  • 18 g (41.4%) coconut oil

  • 7 g (16.1%) lanolin

  • 8 g (18.4%) white beeswax

  • 2 g (4.6%) white clay

  • 2 g (4.6%) tapioca starch

  • 5 g (11.5%) vegetable glycerin

  • 0.5 g (1.1%) vitamin E

  • 1 g (2.3%) essential oil of your choosing

Tools

  • Stainless steel bowl

  • Components to make a double boiler

  • 1 mini silicone spatula

  • 1 scale accurate to 0.1 g

  • 1 pipette

  • 2 ramekins

  • A few spoons

  • 1 mini mixer with frothing attachment  (the little wheel)

  • 1 metal tin (60 ml)

Good to know!

  • You can replace the white beeswax with normal beeswax. Your homemade sculpting wax will then have a natural beeswax scent.

  • Lanolin is used for its restorative, protective, and softening properties.

  • The tapioca starch and white clay absorb the greasiness of the other ingredients.

  • The vegetable glycerin will help hydrate your hair.

    Steps to follow

    1. Prepare and sterilize your equipment and workspace.
    2. Weigh the lanolin, coconut oil, and beeswax, and melt in the stainless steel bowl on a double boiler

  1. Weigh the tapioca starch and white clay in a ramekin.
  2. Weigh the glycerin, vitamin E, and the essential oil in a second ramekin.
  3. When the oils and beeswax have melted, add the powders. Mix well with the mini mixer, using the frothing attachment (the little wheel). Once the powders are dissolved and the mixture is homogeneous, turn off the heat source but leave the bowl on the double boiler.
Add the glycerin, essential oil, and vitamin E, and mix well with the mini mixer. Remove bowl from double boiler.

When the mixture is smooth and homogeneous, pour into the metal tin and let cool

Use and conservation

To use, warm a small amount of homemade hair wax in your hands. Apply to your hair and style as desired.

This DIY hair pomade will keep for at least six months.
